Why write
We’re always told to focus on the things that really move the needle. Although writing may not directly push the needle forward, it can sharpen the needle, which is equally important if not more so. Here's why I spend time writing and why you should do the same.
Distil ideas
Every day we come across new ideas, consume interesting content, and experience new thoughts. I capture these insights in my black notebook but often don’t reconsider or apply them.
So I’ll write to refine and distil these thoughts. When you try to teach something through your writing, you’re forced to develop your own understanding.
Share learnings
I fail. A lot. And though it often sucks, the lessons are insanely valuable. So I’ve learned to love it and find value in the struggles. It’s the best way to learn.
On this blog, I’ll share some of my failures and learnings so maybe you can grow faster by avoiding some of the same errors. And then make your own new ones.
Be creative
Everyone needs a creative outlet of some form.
You don't need a creative outlet, but when things get tough, it might just be what keeps you sane. For me, I had a go at music, creative writing, and dance (none of them at a very high level, mostly just for fun).
Then I found myself being drawn back to writing, which is now my creative outlet — an opportunity to express myself and explore any topic I wish. No parameters, no deadlines, just a raw manifestation of my thoughts.
Challenge yourself
Writing can also be intellectually challenging. How do you phrase certain thoughts, what topics do you write on, and how do you combine thoughts in a fluid narrative to convey a clear message?
In some ways, writing is similar to coding, but written language allows for the expression of emotion and avoids (some of) the limitations of strict coding syntax. Though sometimes writing can feel like coding when you're banging your head against the wall to rewrite the intro twenty times.
In this blog I’ll be cataloguing my ideas, experiments, and learnings from building a startup as an Imperial CS student.
For me, writing is a form of art. It challenges ideas, shares knowledge, and allows me to explore my thoughts. I am eager for it to lead me on adventures, teach me new things, and connect me with others.
